The Module 1 course offers an in-depth study of the legal principles, processes, and procedures of international arbitration. It builds on basic knowledge to provide detailed understanding of arbitration law and practice. Using the UNCITRAL Model Law, international conventions and institutional rules as benchmarks, the course explains how arbitrations are commenced, conducted and concluded. It covers topics from the arbitration agreement and tribunal jurisdiction to hearings, evidence and awards. Module 1 is essential for those aiming to become fully qualified arbitrators; successful completion is a prerequisite for the CIArb Member and Fellow pathways.
Upon finishing Module 1, candidates will be able to:
Define international arbitration and explain the legal framework governing arbitrable disputes.
Apply procedural rules and principles at each stage of an arbitration, including appointing arbitrators and managing communications.
Understand an arbitrator’s authority, limitations and duties, as well as the rights and responsibilities of the parties.
Conduct all key steps of an international arbitration (from drafting the arbitration clause and filing a notice of arbitration to rendering an enforceable award)
Evaluate and apply the UNCITRAL Model Law and relevant arbitration rules in practical situations.
Demonstrate practical case-management skills (e.g. handling evidence, hearings and timetable, applying the rules effectively) and effective communication within the arbitral process.
The course will be delivered over a period of three months, with a combination of private study and tutorials spanning over three days.
The assessment is conducted through an online examination via CIArb’s Learn ADR platform.
Candidates are provided a 48-hour window within a 5-day period to complete the assessment.
The exam is divided into two parts:
Part 1: A compulsory case study exercise worth 40 marks.
Part 2: A written section with 5 questions, out of which candidates must answer 3, worth 60 marks.
To pass the assessment, candidates must achieve an overall score of at least 65%.
Results are typically released within 12 weeks of submission.
There are no formal prerequisites to enrol in Module 1.
Candidates do not need to hold prior CIArb qualifications (such as ACIArb) to take the course.
The course is designed for professionals aiming to strengthen their knowledge of international arbitration, including Legal counsel, In-house legal teams, Dispute resolution consultants.
Although not required, many candidates hold Associate status (ACIArb) at the time of enrolling.

Upon successfully passing the Module 1 assessment, candidates become eligible to apply for Member grade (MCIArb) of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators.
MCIArb is a globally recognized professional credential that authorizes the use of the “Member” designation.
After completing Module 1, candidates may continue their progression in the CIArb pathway by enrolling in: Module 2 – Law of Obligations and ultimately working toward Fellowship status (FCIArb).
