Overview and Objectives

The Introduction to International Arbitration course is a foundational short programme that explains what international arbitration is, how it works, and why it is used. It covers the basic legal and procedural framework governing international (non‑domestic) arbitration (such as the UNCITRAL Model Law and arbitral rules) and relates arbitration to other dispute-resolution method. The course provides a broad understanding of arbitration principles and practices in participants’ jurisdiction. It is ideal for anyone new to arbitration or considering a career in arbitration or alternative dispute resolution.

This course provides an understanding of the general principles of international arbitration and its relationship to other dispute resolution processes. The course will provide candidates with an introduction to the legal framework of, and good practice and procedure in, international arbitration in their jurisdiction.

Learning Outcomes

On successful completion of this course, participants will be able to:

  • Understand the background and rationale of international arbitration

  • Describe the key steps, procedures and practices in an international arbitration

  • Explain how international arbitration differs from other dispute resolution processes

Duration of the Course

Upon registration and payment of course fees, candidates will receive confirmation that they are booked for the course. Joining instructions and course materials will be sent to candidates prior to the course start date by email, on the condition that full payment has been received.

Assessment Format and Process
  • The assessment for this course is conducted through an online multiple-choice examination.

  • Candidates receive login credentials to access the exam via CIArb’s LearnADR platform.

  • The exam must be completed within a 28-day window from the date of receiving access.

  • The test consists of 60 multiple-choice questions.

  • Candidates are allowed up to three attempts to pass the assessment within the 28-day period.

  • Results are displayed immediately upon submission of the test.

  • A minimum score of 55% is required to successfully pass the course.

  • Upon passing the assessment:

    • Candidates can download their course certificate.

    • Candidates are invited to apply for Associate Membership (ACIArb) of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators

Eligibility Criteria
  • There are no formal prerequisites to enrol in the course.

  • The course is open to Lawyers, Working professionals across industries, Students new to arbitration.

  • It is particularly suited for:

    • Individuals pursuing a career in arbitration.

    • Those seeking a foundational knowledge base before advancing to higher CIArb qualifications.
